3D Tombstones for Vector – the micro satellite launch company.

New funding

Our team had yet another great tombstones or deal gift project. Vector, the micro satellite launch company that’s decreasing barriers to entry and increasing speed to orbit, received $21M funding led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from Shasta Ventures and Lightspeed. This round brings Vector’s total funding to $31M and follows a landmark first half of 2017 for the company.

Successful test flight

This investment comes right after Vector’s successful flight test of the full-scale prototype Vector-R launch vehicle in May, making Vector one of the first to accomplish a successful launch in the new commercial space launch industry.

One of a kind tombstones

To celebrate the funding of this innovative company, these 3D printed tombstones were made. A combination of plexi and 3D print ensures a special result. Hopefully the company can skyrocket to even greater results in the future! Good luck!

We’ve created the biggest 3D printed trophy EVER for Gaming giant Konami!

Konami is one of the most well known and well respected video game developers worldwide.  The multinational contacted us earlier this year for a project of a size we’ve never seen for before.

The company needed our help for an award that celebrated the winner of the PES league. For all you non-gamers out there: PES is an abbreviation for the critically acclaimed Pro Evolution Soccer.

The football video game is now in its 16th installment and continues to draw legions of devoted fans. For those seeking an even greater challenge Konami organizes the PES League World Finals, held this year in Cardiff. The best players in each country go through to a regional final in Barcelona or Liverpool. The winners there go on to the final and on June 4th only one can be crowned World PES Champion. Not coincidently, the final is played in the same weekend as the Champion’s league final.

The team made a 75 CM by 20 CM award customized to Konami’s design, making it the world’s largest 3D printed award to date.

Rather than order directly through the website as many of 3D Trophy Factory’s customers do this required a bespoke approach by the team.

This time care had to be taken to design this special trophy so it would print perfectly the first time. The trophy was first 3D printed and then had to be post processed by hand. Support structures had to be removed and the trophy was then hand painted.

The 3D print itself is made from a light curing resin called a photopolymer. Stereolithography works through lasers moving through a vat of this resin hardening it one layer at a time. The award has a smooth finishing, with a transparent resin on top of the massive 3d printed trophy. The logo is also 3D printed and the stickers are attached manually. With an award of this size, manual labour is a defining factor to reach this level of finishing.

Hopefully yesterday’s winner has a enough shelve space to store away this giant. We surely wish him a well deserved congratulations and hopes he enjoys his one-of-a-kind design!

The Oscars returns to its original version thanks to 3D printing

Since 1928 The Oscars promises every year an evening of total glamour and prestige where stars show up in the most beautiful and magnificent outfits. Such a night, calls for an equally impressive award. For 33 years the statuettes have been manufactured at a Chicago trophy company. But over time, little changes have crept in the award. The foundry decided they wanted the Oscars to look again like the original one in 1928. The Academy Polich Tallix in New York offered the solution: it could scan the orignal award and then make a 3D-printed modern version out of the scan.

First of all, the process starts by scanning a classic Oscar from 1928 and a modern one of 2015. These two are then blended to make a new design that resembles closer to the original award.

This new design is then 3D-printed in wax and dipped in ceramic shell slurry. After this, the award gets fired in an oven and bronze is poured into the shell. It has to cool overnight, before the final step can occur: the bronze castings are broken out of the shell the next day and the award is covered with 24 karat gold.

Revenge of the nerds: The 5 biggest prizes in gaming tournaments

The gaming industry has definitely gone trough some major changes over the last few years, with competitive gaming reaching new heights of popularity.  After we made the insane looking award for King of the Kill a few weeks ago, we started to get curious.. It seems that competitive gaming has been taken out of the player’s living room and placed into the world’s biggest venues. Thousands of spectators are watching these games live, and we’re not even mentioning the ones that view these tournaments on live streams.
thumb_img_1294_1024Competitive gaming or e-sports are a million dollar industry with an extremely loyal community of gaming enthusiasts and fans. More than 20 years after the first video game tournaments, the top eSports events draw audiences that would make traditional sports events jealous. Companies like Coca cola, Nissan and Red bull are just some of the high-level sponsors that are part of this insane marketing machine. This results in prize money that trumps tournaments such as Tour de France or the Super bowl. If you want your kid to become the next top-earning athlete, then you might want to reconsider buying a PS4 of a PC instead of those of expensive private tennis lessons.
